Laptop A survey by market research firm The NPD Group indicates that laptop sales beat desktop sales in the month of May.

I am honestly suprised it hadn't happened sooner. I've owned a total of 8 laptops over the past 21 years, but only 3 desktops, and one rack-mount server.

Laptops accounted for more than 54 percent of the nearly $500 million in retail computer sales in May, the Port Washington, N.Y., company said Tuesday.

That compares with January 2000, when laptops represented less than 25 percent of sales volume, NPD said.

My First Laptop

I fell in love with laptops ever since I got my first from Radio Shack (a TRS-80 Model 100) over 21 years ago (around 1982). I learned early the convenience of mobility. It wasn't until I acquired an Apple PowerBook Duo 11 years later, in 1993, that the Model 100 fell out of favor.

Productivity

An Apple Macintosh Titanium PowerBook G4 serves me well these days. When I'm at my home office I have two screens to work from: the one on the laptop, plus a 22" Cinema Display. More workspace adds up to more productivity, as does portability.
